WORKSHOP: Mass Timber in Practice: Opportunities and Constraints in New York City

This session explores how mass timber and passive house principles can work together to deliver high-performance, low-carbon buildings in dense urban environments like New York City. Drawing from real-world case studies and the Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) Mass Timber Studio, speakers will examine different mass timber systems. Attendees will gain insight into current design, regulatory, and supply-chain challenges, along with strategies to navigate long lead times and cost drivers unique to mass timber construction. The session will equip architects, developers, and contractors with practical takeaways on leveraging mass timber’s prefabrication, speed and environmental benefits to advance sustainable urban housing.
